Creamy Amish Vanilla Custard

Indulge in this rich and creamy vanilla custard, a timeless dessert that has been cherished for generations. Its nostalgic flavor is worth every minute of preparation, making it a delightful treat to share with family and friends.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Nutmeg for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). In a large glass or metal bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and hot water.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until they are light in color and fluffy. Gradually add a small amount of the hot milk mixture to the eggs to temper them, then combine the two mixtures fully. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  3. Pour the custard mixture into ramekins or a 2-quart baking dish. If using ramekins, place them in a high-sided baking pan.
  4. Fill the baking pan with about half an inch of water. Bake for 1 hour, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. If using a larger baking dish, bake for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  5. Allow the custard to cool for 1 hour. Before serving, sprinkle with nutmeg. Enjoy it warm or refrigerate for a chilled treat!

Savor the deliciousness!
